The Rickey being the Rickey
Rickey Henderson, 45 years young, has re-signed with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League as he hopes to defend his crown as the MVP of the Atlantic League All-Star game -- and maybe make it back to the major leagues. I don't think anyone would dispute that the Rickey is one of the best leadoff men in the history of baseball and he wasn't a bad outfielder either. Age aside, doesn't this guy have to be better than Kevin Millar? Millar's play in right field makes us all but forget about Manny's escapades in left.
I say we sign the Rickey, stick him in right and let his talent do the rest. Or at the very least, have a foot race before each game to determine the starter. Now I have no doubt that the Rickey is still much faster than Millar ever was, so Millar will need a head start. Maybe start the Rickey at 2nd base and Millar at 3rd -- the first one to home plate wins.
I'll put my money on the Rickey for a couple of reasons:
1) Millar is really, really slow
2) if Millar sees a camera between 3rd and home, he'll have to stop and get his mug on televison (note to Kevin Millar: stop doing every interview, offering every quote and take extra work in the batting cage and in the outfield).
Bring back the Rickey!
